Smooth Jazz News

Jeff Golub Says He And Peter White Have Completely Different Styles

  • Jeff Golub is currently enjoying another year on the road with the popular Guitars & Saxes franchise. The show, which usually features two saxophonists and two guitarists with a backing band, this year includes keyboardist Jeff Lorber as musical director.

Golub and Peter White handle the guitar duties on the road, and Golub says it's been interesting because they have such completely different styles. New-York-based Golub concentrates on bluesy, electric guitar licks while Los Angeles-based White is focused on the more delicate acoustic sound he's known for.

Golub explained: "Peter and I have done a number of things together, we're good friends and I think it does work because we do have such different styles. There's no competition whatsoever. Even though I don't think either of us is very competitive when it comes to music. But there's nothing similar in the way that my guitar sounds and the way Peter's sounds. So it is like two different instruments."

The next Guitars & Saxes show, which also features Jessy J and Gerald Albright, will be June 22nd at the Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri.

Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride Win JJA Honors

  • Multiple Grammy winner Herbie Hancock was named Musician of the Year at the Jazz Journalists Association Awards, held in New York on June 18th. The honor came just six months after earning a Record of the Year Grammy for his CD River: The Joni Letters.

  • Bandleader Maria Schneider, also a previous Grammy winner, was the awards ceremony's biggest winner with four trophies for her Blue Skies CD.

Other winners include trumpeter Terence Blanchard, bassist Christian McBride, violinist Regina Carter, and guitarist Lionel Loueke.

Other Jazz Journalist Association Awards winners included male vocalist Andy Bey, female vocalist Abbey Lincoln, pianist Hank Jones, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman, baritone saxophonist James Carter, and guitarist Bill Frisell.

Veteran pianist Marian McPartland received a Lifetime Achievement Award and author Doug Ramsey received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Jazz Journalism.

A complete list of JJA winners can be viewed online at jazzhouse.org.

Saxophonist Dave Koz to Get Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Dave Koz is among a list of 25 eclectic entertainers from motion pictures, television, recording and radio who will be honored by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce when they receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year.

In a career spanning nearly two decades, Dave Koz has established himself as a platinum-selling artist, humanitarian, entrepreneur, radio host, and instrumental music advocate. As the recipient of six Grammy nominations, the list of artists who Koz has played with bears testament to his talent.

Koz is honored along with recording entrants that include Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Shakira, the Village People, Rush, the Miracles and Doug Morris.

Radio welcomes just two new names to the famed walk, Bill Handel and comic-actor and all-around Simpsons power player Harry Shearer.

Motion picture recipients include Robert Downey Jr., Cameron Diaz, Hugh Jackman, Ralph Fiennes, Sir Ben Kingsley, William H. Macy, Tim Burton, Leslie Caron and Tinkerbell (the animated Peter Pan character).

Those honored in television are reality show producer Mark Burnett, veteran sitcom writer Chuck Lorre, Felicity Huffman, CSI’s William Petersen, The Closer’s Kyra Sedgwick and John Stamos.
